Amazing Archery Adventure

On Friday the 13th of May 2016, 9 pupils from Highnam Academy went to participate in an archery event held a Newent secondary school. Once we arrived, we first listened to the following tips so that we knew how to hold a bow and arrow.

Steps :

  1. Face sideways on (other way if applying to left handers).
  2. Hold you bow vertically and insert your arrow.
  3. Hold the string with three fingers underneath the arrow (Make sure you’re not holding the arrow!)
  4.  Pull on the string so your elbow is in line with the top of your ear and your middle finger is touching the corner of your mouth.
  5. If you’re left handed shut your right eye and aim. If you are right handed shut your left eye and aim.
  6. Let the string slip from your fingers and you will hopefully get GOLD!!!

Round 1:Suction arrows:

We started the sport by practising the suction arrows. We had to aim for a small target about 2 yards out from it (we did it in pairs) .First it was Matthew Julke and Jack Harris, they both scored 11 points and it kept on going until everyone had a go every of the four schools who were with us. At the start Highnam were joint 2nd with an another school and Ann Cam were first in the first round and overall.

ROUND 2: Highest scorer

In round 2 of archery four schools competed for who was the best archer out of the four schools.

We started off by having three arrows and a bow. We shot them at the target and we tried to get as many points as possible. In pairs we tried to get as many points of our own. It was close between Xavier and Harri as they both scored 11 points. Until Fuiva had her turn and the boys were beaten by 2 points. As Fuiva was the highest scorer from Highnam, she went against the other children that had won from their school and competed against one another. Overall Fuiva came 2nd.   Well done, Fuiva!

Round 3

After our practice sessions using the suction arrows, we moved onto the proper archery - in this event we all had a blast and it was so fun!

The bows are not like ordinary bows, oh no they are pull back bows. With these bows you don’t use arrows such as soft-tip arrows, you use real arrows with points on the end so we had to be especially careful!

Charlotte P managed to score all straight golds in one turn! Overall, we had a great day and would definitely do archery again!
