Excellent Evacuee Trip

This term we have been learning all about World War II. A big part of this experience for many was the evacuation process which was announced on the 31st August 1939. Today Highnam pupils visited the Dean Forest Railway to see what it was like to travel on a steam train and to try and imagine what it was like to be evacuated.

After a tour around the Norchard Station we travelled to Lydney Junction where out teacher explained the evacuation process and that a billeting officer would meet the evacuees and arrange for them to go home with a host family. It was wonderful to see all the pupils entering into the day and wearing super replica clothing.

After a short train ride we enjoyed out lunch in Lydney Park. Lots of lunches were wrapped in brown paper and would have been similar to the luncheon provided for the evacuees in 1939. After a short game of cricket and a visit to the play park we returned to the train and carried on along the line to Parkend.

Thank you to all our helpers - we had a great day. Here are a few photos from our trip...
