Traffic Survey in Highnam

On Monday 1st February 2010, Mr Dean’s maths set carried out a traffic survey in Highnam. There were four different locations around the village where the traffic survey was to take place. They were: Wetherleigh Drive, the Spine Road (near the cycle path), Lassington Lane and the B4215. We split up into groups and with an adult walked to the correct location. The traffic count started at 11:20am and finished at 11:40am.

Here are the results:

Back in the classroom, using our tally charts, we worked out the frequency (total) for each vehicle and represented the data in a bar chart.

Here are some of our other findings and predictions:-

  • On the B4215, in one hour we predicted there would be 696 cars.
  • There was double the number of cars on Lassington Lane than on the Spine Road.
  • In five hours (non-peak) we predict there would be 3,480 travelling along the B4215.
  • In five hours (non-peak) we predict there would be 225 lorries travelling along the B4215.
  • More cars on the B4215 were travelling in the direction of Gloucester than Newent.
  • There is an approximate car ratio of 1:30 when comparing Wetherleigh Drive to the B4215. For every 1 car travelling along Wetherleigh Drive there would be 30 cars on the B4215.
